Moving home is a big job. Moving home with children is a big job with snacks, missing shoes, emotional negotiations, and at least one small person asking, “Are we nearly there?” before you have even left the driveway.
The good news? With a little planning, a lot of patience, and the right support, moving with children can be much smoother than expected.
At Relok8, we help busy families pack, unpack, declutter and settle into their new homes quickly, so the whole move feels less like chaos and more like a fresh start.
Keep it calm
Talk early and keep routines steady.
Pack smart
Create first night bags and clear labels.
Settle faster
Pack bedrooms last and unpack them first.
1. Talk to your children early
Children cope better when they know what is happening. Even if they seem excited, moving can feel big and unsettling.
Keep the explanation simple and positive:
“We are moving to a new home. Your bed, toys and favourite things are coming too. We will pack everything carefully and set up your new room.”
For younger children, avoid giving too much detail too early. For older children, let them ask questions and be part of the process.
2. Let them pack a special box
Give each child a small first night box or backpack with their favourite things. Include pyjamas, a favourite toy or comfort item, a book, drink bottle, snacks, a change of clothes, toothbrush, a small activity or colouring book, and chargers for older children.
This box should stay with you, not go on the moving truck. Otherwise, the teddy required for sleep will be hiding in box 47, and nobody needs that level of drama at 9pm.
3. Declutter before packing
Children collect things. Party bag toys, half-used sticker books, rocks with emotional significance, and craft projects that somehow involve glitter from 2021.
Before packing, go through bedrooms, playrooms and wardrobes. Sort items into keep, donate, recycle, bin and unsure.
A pre-move declutter means fewer boxes, less unpacking and a calmer new home.
4. Keep routines as normal as possible
During a move, routine helps children feel safe. Try to keep meal times, bedtime, school or childcare routines, favourite books and activities as steady as possible. You do not need perfection. You just need enough normality to stop everyone from eating cereal for dinner four nights in a row. No judgement if that happens once.
5. Pack children’s rooms last and unpack them first
Children’s bedrooms should usually be one of the last areas packed and one of the first areas unpacked. This helps them feel settled quickly in the new home.
Start with the bed made, favourite toys visible, clothes accessible, a night light or lamp, school bag ready, and comfort items easy to find. Even if the rest of the house is still full of boxes, a familiar bedroom can make a huge difference.
6. Prepare for moving day
Moving day can be exciting, stressful and noisy. If possible, arrange for children to spend time with family, friends or at school while the main move happens.
Have snacks, water bottles, wipes, basic first aid, spare clothes, chargers, favourite toys, easy lunch and any medication ready. Keep pets and children away from heavy lifting areas so movers have clear access.
7. Label children’s boxes clearly
Clear labelling saves time and stress. Label boxes with the child’s name, room, general contents and priority level.
“Lola, Bedroom, School clothes, Open first”
This makes unpacking faster and helps everyone find what they need without opening 12 boxes labelled “stuff.”
8. Expect big feelings
Children may feel excited one minute and upset the next. That is normal. They might miss the old house, worry about school, or feel unsettled in the new space. Give them time to adjust, walk them through the new home, show them where their things are, and let them help with small decisions.
9. Get help where it matters most
Packing and unpacking a family home takes time. Add children, work, school, pets and daily life into the mix, and it can quickly become overwhelming.
Relok8 can assist with decluttering before the move, packing the whole home or selected rooms, labelling boxes clearly, unpacking key areas, and setting up bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes and linen cupboards.
Moving with children does not have to feel impossible. And yes, snacks count as a moving strategy.
If you are moving home with children and want help packing, unpacking or getting organised, Relok8 can help make your next move a smooth one.
